What is 4340 Steel Hardness Chart

The 4340 Hardness Chart indicates that the alloy requires the material to be welded in annealed state and then heat treated. This helps to resist the martensite formation and also the cold cracking. The hardness of the 4340 grade is 187 HB.

 

What is 4340 steel plate ?

The 4340 possesses ultra high strength and it is defined as a low alloy medium carbon. The 4340 steel plate is known for its high strength, toughness , ductility, creep resistance and fatigue strength compared to other steels grades. It has nickel, chromium and molybdenum in its chemical composition, which makes the 4340 steel sheet have higher tensile strength, ranging between 830-1080 MPa. However, it is to be noted that the 4340 aq steel plate has a decent corrosion resistance and it would not be effective in highly corrosive situations. The grade is readily weldable in annealed conditions.

 

4340 steel vs 4140

Both 4140 and 4340 have different chemical compositions. 4340 grade has more carbon content while 4140 contains more chromium. Also, there is an additional element- nickel in the 4340 grade, which increases its strength and fracture toughness. 4140 grade has good corrosion resistance, machinability, and ductility, whereas the 4340 grade possesses good resistance to fatigue, wear, and atmospheric corrosion. It also contains high formability, machinability, and heat treatability.

 

What is 4340 Steel Heat Treatment Chart

The annealing process starts at 830 degrees C and then cooling is at 730 degrees C. The furnace cooling is to 610 degrees C at 20 degrees C per hour. This process is followed by air cooling at room temperature. The 4340 grade is normalized at 815 degrees C.

 

4340 Steel Vs Titanium

The 4340 possesses ultra high strength whereas titanium has high strength. While 4340 offers decent corrosion resistance, titanium material offers good corrosion resistance. The 4340 material has a tensile strength between 830-1080 MPa, whereas the tensile strength of Titanium material is 220 MPa.

 

What is AMS 6359 ?

AMS 6359 can be defined as a sub-specification of the 4340 that comes with medium carbon content. It is deep-hardening, which means it possesses excellent tensile strength in tempered and hardened forms.

It is heated to 830 degrees Celsius before being quenched in oil. The alloy is then forged at temperatures ranging from 42 to 1233 degrees Celsius before being annealed at 844 degrees Celsius. The alloy is then tempered and hardened after cooling in the furnace.
